A crane runway beam enquiry needs more than a crane tonnage and a building length. The supplier needs the approved steelwork information, the interfaces with the crane system and a clear statement of what the quotation should include. A short, organised brief helps your contractor and fabrication teams review the same package.
Start with drawings and the supply boundary
Identify the runway beams you need to purchase and issue the relevant drawings with their revision status. Explain whether the enquiry covers beams only or also includes connection items, associated supporting steelwork and other components. List exclusions and information still awaiting approval.
For projects using AISC provisions, the 2022 Code of Standard Practice describes the importance of contract documents that communicate the character, quantity and complexity of the steelwork. Include the standards and specifications applicable to your own project in the enquiry.
Coordinate crane and building interfaces
Provide the information issued by your project design team and crane supplier. Identify who is responsible for confirming the relationship between the runway steelwork, rails, supports and the building structure. Questions affecting design acceptance should be returned to the responsible project professionals.
- Approved member geometry, quantities and support arrangement.
- Crane supplier information relevant to the specified steelwork.
- Rail attachments and adjoining component details within the supply scope.
- End connections, stiffeners, splices and hole requirements shown in the drawings.
- Document owners and the route for resolving interface questions.

Define fabrication, inspection and delivery requirements
Issue the material, welding, dimensional and treatment specifications with the drawing package. If particular records or witness points are required, identify them before the quotation is finalised. The inspection methods and extent should follow the agreed order requirements.
Transport and receiving information also belongs in the brief. Tell the supplier about any known component size constraints, shipment batches, unloading arrangements and target receiving dates. These inputs support a discussion of fabrication assemblies, identification and packing.
Use relevant experience without treating it as a standard design
The Panjin forging facility includes crane ratings of 75, 50, 32 and 20 tonnes. It demonstrates an industrial application in the project portfolio; it does not establish the beam dimensions or capacity for a different building.
Review the crane beam fabrication information and prepare the latest drawings, quantities and interface details. You can use the RFQ brief template to organise the enquiry, then submit it to the team for review.
